Carl Thomas Hoppe (August 22, 1897 – January 15, 1981) was a South Texas artist. Hoppe was born to German immigrants August and Teresa Hoppe in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas.〔''San Antonio Express-News'', January 16, 1981, Obituaries, Classifieds Section, p. 1.〕 Hoppe's day job was salesman for Joske's Department Store in downtown San Antonio, from which he retired in the 1970s.〔''San Antonio City Directory'', annual issues, 1970-1982.〕 He was an artist of local notability during his lifetime, from the early 1900s through the 1960s, and appreciation for his style and skills resurged in the late 20th and early 21st Century.〔The West Texas A&M University ''Communicator'', Vol. 4, No. 13, Feb. 24, 1997.〕 He specialized in landscapes, in a somewhat impressionistic style, signed with a characteristic “C. Hoppe”.〔John and Deborah Powers: ''Texas Painters, Sculptors & Graphic Artists: A Biographical Dictionary of Artists in Texas Before 1942'', Woodmont Books, Austin, Tex., 2000, p. 606.〕 Hoppe began painting as a youth and later studied under José Arpa y Perea, exhibiting numerous paintings in the mid to late 1920s. Some of the exhibits were held at the Witte Museum in San Antonio by Arpa (Museum of Fine Arts of Seville) and his students.〔Richard Plumly: ''Carl Thomas Hoppe (1897-1981) San Antonio, Texas'', http://texaspaintings.com/b-hoppe.htm, retrieved 2 Aug 2009.〕 He knew many of the leading artists in the state,〔 including Porfirio Salinas,〔Richard Plumly: ''Porfirio Salinas, The Man Who Painted Texas, 1910-1973, San Antonio, Texas'', http://texaspaintings.com/salinas.htm, retrieved 2 Aug 2009.〕 Robert William Wood, and Arpa,〔Caroline Remy: ''ARPA, JOSÉ (1858-1952)'', http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/AA/far17.html, retrieved 2 Aug 2009.〕 and went on field trips with Julian Onderdonk.〔Minnie B. Cameron: ''ONDERDONK, JULIAN (1882-1922)'', http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/OO/fon6.html, retrieved 2 Aug 2009.〕 Hoppe's paintings have been exhibited at the River Art Group's River Art Gallery in San Antonio, Texas, and in 1997 a Special Exhibit of his works was held at the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas.〔 Hoppe died January 15, 1981 in San Antonio, at age 83.〔 ==References== 抄文引用元・出典: フリー百科事典『 ウィキペディア(Wikipedia)』 ■ウィキペディアで「Carl Hoppe」の詳細全文を読む スポンサード リンク
